quick update

So. the hand… is really bad
Therefore, no physical activity could be done for past 3 weeks and still counting.
Diets been working though.
Without any tiring exercises, I managed to drop about 6 extra pounds. currently sitting at 226.
Oh man. Stuff I can do with perfectly fine hand+wrist.

But don't want to over do anything to prevent it from fully healing.

After back to back wedding this past weekend, my injured right hand was in so much effin pain. Therefore... I'm using double support for 'possiblly' fractured hand... Shock Doctor 824 wrist 3 strap support with #gangstawrap by@marksmellybell hope this hand heals soon. Got lots of training to catch up. The injury occurred about 3 weeks ago during judo training when one of my training partner landed on top of the hand which resulted in swelling. Thought I could tough it out as most of the injuries... But not being able to hold the camera for a period of time wasn't something I could take. Won't be using any battery grip not gigantic lenses till this hand is feeling better. #imsoinjuryproneforbigboy #ineedoneofthosebeansgokuhas

Day 9 DONE

oh man. It was one of the most painful day to shoot wedding.
I couldn't get up this morning because my entire body was aching. Took an ice cold shower to wake my body up. Didn't really help… took extra long to get ready for work… the drive was horrible. By the time I got there, the body ache was at its peak. Messed up wrist wasn't helping. Heavy camera… back to back wedding day… OH GOD please… let me just get by today… I'll have next two days to sleep this off… please…

I should've taken some Advils before I started shooting. Thought it will all just go away if I kept drinking water. NOPE. stayed with me the entire night. Until- I asked a friend if she had some Advils with her. AND SHE DID!! took two pills. around 9… didn't kick in till 10:30 about 15 minutes before the entire wedding was over.

Oh, well- at least I feel better now…
It's so bad. I can't even grip my camera the way I need to. it make very annoying cracking sound every time I move and the elbow wasn't helping either. I seriously need to go see a doctor or take some major time off from lifting. I need to take care of my body first
So it's been 9 days since I started the "BET" with Jonathan. I've dropped 6 solid pounds off of my body. and I look more solid than I did on day 1. And.. the bruises on my body has now disappeared! but they'll come back once I go back to Judo. lol

I'm really tired. just going to finish downloading the images to the computer and call it a night. Will post about my eating and whatnot sometime tomorrow!

Here's a comparison from Day1 to Day9
dropped just 6 lbs but pretty solid on the right compare to softy on the left. YES… the lighting changes a lot… :( oh well! it's a progress right?!

break from lifting/judo

Thought I can handle little bit of pain and keep working out.
Well… it turns out it's not just a little pain and I don't want to make this injury into a serious one. After about 30 minutes of Judo, my left elbow felt like it was about to pop out. Keep hearing clicking noise as I would move the arm. Right wrist has so much pain it is unbearable. Especially when I perform any movements that involves bending and twisting.

So… I decided to take some time off from lifting/judo- at least a week. Until next thursday! and see how it feels… of course, I should spend more time rehabbing and taking care of myself- Would love to go see a doctor to find out what's really wrong and the time table i need to get it healed perfectly.

However, that won't stop me from running and doing jump ropes- I still am trying to lose as much weight as possible. It's really really hard :( feeling super weak. 198 might be super extreme number to reach. I'm so close to breaking 220's I just stepped on the scale and it read 231!! trying so hard not to eat anything right now. I am so hungry. arrrggg haha

No photo today- feel like I look the same everyday. So I guess my photo update will be about once a week or so to see a slow progress I'm making. Still have 126 days left to go!! I can make it!!

Day 5

Oh man. Elbows are hurting too much. It's a clear sign that I need to stop or at least slow down on exercising/putting strain on them to help heal faster. But, I don't want to miss out on the opportunity of learning something new or hide of losing the gain. Possibly stepping backwards instead of staying on track.

I need to remember I'm doing this to stay healthy. I'm not a pro athlete who will make living from this nor there is any fame waiting at the end. Just… stubborn self who doesn't like to slow down when started something. Bad- characteristic : addictive personality.

I've only dropped so little weight- but gotta remember it was only day 5. Dropped close to 6 lbs. YES. I am so fat that I have a lot of excessive weight that can go and pretty quickly. But the main problem is here: I was so weak at the Judo class today… I seriously couldn't perform the way I wanted to… Is it really a good idea for me to drop 40 lbs in 4months just to make the lower weight class when I won't even be able to use my full strength???!!

I only wanted to enter such a weight class because I thought it will be 'easier' for me to go against the guys are are 'weaker' and 'lighter' than I am… But- remember this! they are probably not dropping that much of weight- most likely around 5-10lbs if needed. Therefore, the opponents I'll be facing will have the full strength they are used to training or practicing. Where as I will be so much weaker by comparison since my only focus was to 'drop the weight'.

Yes, it is little too early to come to that conclusion- I may be just giving myself an excuse to stop this 4months diet and pig out again. I won't find out until I go below 220 range to feel the big difference. I might be just low on carb to have energy to burn. Tomorrow, I'll try to carb up an hour before the practice to see how I feel. I'll try to consume my carb intake during that time instead of earlier day.

Allrightiee it's a progress! slow. but steady. I can already see the difference around the belly from Day 1 and Day 5.

I did drink few beers just now… bad idea Joon. bad bad idea. Will see in the morning!

Day 4

Day 4.

Holding the temptation to eat late night… oh my all the instant noodle I can eat
At least… I can feel the differences in the morning! don't feel bloated or groggy.
Slowly dropping the weight- of course, it's the morning weight so the night weight will be different than now.

my midsection is too thick. fat. ewww!

Come the weigh in day- hopefully I'm a different person!

Made a bet with a friend of mine.
I'll lose 40 lbs until 11.20.14-
sounds really stupid. losing 40lbs in 4months. 10lbs a month. 2.5lbs a week.
The first 20lbs is going to be fairly easy.
the problem is the last 20lbs.

I'll be photographing myself every morning and post it here for the progress.
For my keep sake- and only to motivate myself.

what an ugly body I have. ewwwww!

The bet:

What I get if I win-
I'll receive a new Judo Gi. Double Weaved. Official Competition approved. ranges from $60(used from ebay; which I don't mind at all) ~ $200(brand new from an online shop; top of the line)
He can chose whatever he wants- in that price range as long as it is double weaved and comp. approved.

What he gets if I lose-
A 30x40(inches- print size) framed print. Any image he wants from my work.
it's going to look amazing at his house.

OH YEA BABY!

Getting back to the routine.

Dieting and exercise isn't just thing you do to keep you in shape- it's got to be a lifestyle for you to do everyday to keep you healthy.

I was once on a regular routine of eating clean (within my daily caloric intake with 'healthier' food) and exercise on daily basis. Although, my exercises were mainly focused on weight training (Powerlifting/Bodybuilding), I was able to keep lower body fat and slimmer physique. The key was the diet.

I am now at a point where I need to completely change my diet and eating habits to change the way I look and how I feel. Such a large frame of body I carry around- it needs to stop.

I can still proudly say that I am able to move faster than any man at my size or weight. But, that doesn't make me happy… Gaining this much excessive weight only lead to mild depression… (self diagnosed) high anxiety… very low self-esteem.

Will see how far I go with this dieting and exercising. I said by 11.22.14 I'll be at 195lbs. For a lot of people 195lbs is such a high number- but for me that's probably at 13% BF range.

Time to focus and get serious about this shiznez

Injury prone

I am so injury prone.

started hurting myself since I was about 4 years old from falling off the bed- fractured forearm.
couple of years later- fell down while running- fractured wrist.
car accident- fractured left leg
break dancing- injured every joint in my body
soccer- pulled groin multiple times
track- pulled hamstring
since lifting- shoulder, back, wrist, elbow, neck, hip…
earlier this year- fractured left foot
since Judo- hyper extended elbows

and yesterday-
strained left calf muscle and injured right hand…

hahaha the list will never stop. and wow-
really frustrating how often I hurt myself.

be smart about your training. : to myself.

My goto throw

"Morote-Seoi-Nage : Two hand shoulder throw"

I started Judo on April 1, 2014 so it's only been 3 months and I'm still a very much a beginner when it comes to performing techniques.

I've always been intrigued in art of Judo and loved watching it during olympics as one of the must event to follow with. As a kid, I've done TKD(tae kwon do) and HKD(hap ki do) for total of about 5 years. Although, I wasn't able to get a black belt due to constant change of location. However, Judo has always been the sports I wanted to try and train because I really didn't like getting hit or punched.

For past few years since I started my diet and weight training- I've gotten a lot stronger than I thought I was going to be- and my training has transformed my body into very thick and solid chunk. To start, I am bottom heavy due to over training on legs with squats and dead lifts. That doesn't mean my upper body lacks on size or strength either. It's just that on comparison, my legs are way too big for my body.

In Judo, having a bottom heavy body kinda helps. Since I am so used to lifting heavy weights with my legs and performing lots of Power Cleans and Jerks- I can squat down and get up with pretty good explosiveness which helps with lots of throwing techniques, especially with Morote-Seoi-Nage. At first, I was not used to getting down while throwing and just tried to lift the opponent with my upper body strength, which only lead to hurting my elbows and draining energy during practice. However, after learning how to get low and stand up- MSN has been so comfortable! and I love how it looks!! haha yeah yeah. a newbie talking about the looks. but- the Throwing is what got me into JUDO and I want to be able to throw people at ease and with the matches!

I am still very weak when it comes to ground work : newaza (wrestling like movements) because I am still very over weight to move quickly and my upper body is too thick to maneuver under the opponents. Being able to bench 1.5x my body weight and dead lift 3x my body weight helps me with controlling the opponents on the ground. Although, at the dojo I'm working out at- I only use about 50% of my strength at the most so I won't hurt anybody- but, there are times when I lose a little and explode a bit. Only reason I'm waiting for the tournaments- to use my 100% of strength during the match without worrying about hurting the dojo mates.

My ultimate goal in Judo is to train until I obtain black belt, was told it takes about 4 years, and win a match with beautiful Morote Seoi Nage.

It's serious business

The cutting has officially started!

Today- 06.30.14
I am at 230lbs

on 11.22.14
there is a Dallas invitation Judo tournament
I'll be entering Novice class and with 90kg division which is under 198lbs.
one weight class lower than 90kg is 81kg:178.2lbs
I've never been under 180 in 10years and it is impossible for me to drop healthy weight in such a time.

My goal is to get down to 195 to be safe.
dropping 35lbs in 4 1/2 month sounds very reasonable and I've also done it before!
I'll be light and tight!

My current workout schedule for this week. From Monday-Thurdsday since Friday and Saturday I'll be working late.

-Morning as soon as I get up
1hr of jump roping + light weight lifting for speed
-8pm~9pm
1hr of Judo practice from Monday-Thursday
-10pm~11pm
heavy weight lifting focusing on Power movement : BP+PC+DL+SQ

diet will start with 2,500 calorie intake per day
20% fat
40% carb
40% protein
for a week to see how my body reacts.

ok ok ok.

It's been a couple of years since I posted anything on this blog. I have gained total of 45 lbs since the last post and lost all the gains. Well- actually didn't lose all the gains, but definitely feel a lot weaker and heavy.

At first, my goal was to lose weight and get into bodybuilding.

Dropped from 235lbs fatty to 185 skinny.
Felt I was too skinny so added about 10~15lbs of muscle over the year.
However, I wasn't strong enough for the size- then I changed the entire workout routine from bodybuilding and weight lose to power lifting.

When I first started exercising-
Body Weight - 235 Fatas
Bench Press - 180
Squat - 185
Dead Lift - 155

My last 1RM at the peak of my lifting phase
BW - 220
BP - 355
Squat - 515
DL - 605

if you ask me to do some 1RM, I won't be able to do half of those weight- but still am strong enough to handle some major weight.

Exercising hard is great, but exercising smart is the best way to keep the longevity of your training life- Trying to push extra weight only lead to injuries and slows down the progress.

List of injuries since I started lifting.
-multiple shoulder injuries
-multiple back injuries
-pulled groin few times
-fractured foot
-hyperextended elbows (most recent: not from lifting though)

What have I learned from the past years of being exercising if you may ask-
-Before start setting goals of exercise, find out what you are trying to achieve. Wether it is losing weight, gaining muscle, or building strength.
-Know your body and who you are first: if you are top heavy or bottom heavy: how focused you are staying on track
-Do not ever compare yourself with other people: everyone is different and it takes a lot of time and effort.
-Do not judge and laugh at others. EVER. everyone start from the bottom! you once were a weak and a beginner.
-Number is just a number: your weight on scale doesn't mean anything! unless you are competing and need to be in the weight class.
-Number doesn't make you better: the numbers written on the side of dumbbells and plates doesn't mean anything. Don't be stupid and try to use the weights you can't handle.
-Train smart: try to have a plan on each workout and keep track of your progress
-Listen to your body: make sure to rest if needed. You are doing this to stay healthy.
-Don't judge other types of workouts. never laugh at cross fitters because you are a bodybuilder. I bet you can't handle half of the routines cross fitters do.
-Have fun!
-Don't starve!
-Be happy and smile :)
-Stay humble

Ever since I fractured my foot in early February, I haven't really been to the gym to lift weights. I couldn't push off any heavy weights as I wanted to which only discouraged my workouts. Slowly and slowly I stayed away from the gym. Although, I came across Judo and been practicing ever since. It's definitely a different exercise from what I am used to.
Yes, I did play soccer and ran track(100m 200m 110HH) during high school. My most recent exercises had been mostly standing still and moving the weights up and down which required bare minimum on endurance and agility. The strength doesn't help you to win the match or throw the opponent on the ground. I got my fatass knocked around by a tiny person (about 5'6" 130lbs at the most) on my very first class and was very humbling experience.

My current goal in terms of training is to be quick and be explosive. Currently sitting at 233lbs and will have to go down to about 190lbs range to be in the weight class for open tournament in the end of the year. It will be a slow and steady process to drop the weight, but the training is going to be so much fun!

So from now on, this blog is going to have good clips of explosive workouts- clips of Judo techniques- and my progress on getting back to FitJoon from FatJoon and how good of a Judoka I am turning into. hahahaha starting martial arts at age 27 is very laughable- I'm not a kid- but it's a great hobby.

Alright Alright Alright-

Let's hope I can keep posting on this blog. I need to get back to fixing my website :(

from my good friend Gyuho's wedding couple of weeks ago. SO FAT!! :(
